A New York family came to Foshan with a floor plan, a fixed budget and one goal: furnish the whole home without sacrificing the pieces that mattered most.
Project at a glance
- Furniture budget: $20K
- Foshan sourcing: 3 days
- Project: Four-bedroom whole home
- Pieces selected: 18+
The Challenge Wasn’t Finding Furniture. It Was Making $20K Work.
- Whole Home. Living room, dining room and four bedrooms had to be bought in one trip
- Fixed Budget. The total product budget was capped at roughly $20,000
- Still Needs Quality. The sofa, beds and dining table could not visibly compromise on quality
The project started before the flight
Three weeks before Michael and Dana landed in Guangzhou, they sent us a floor plan, a warm mid-century moodboard, a room-by-room shopping list and one number that shaped everything: $20,000, all in.
By the time they arrived, we knew which pieces deserved real money, which categories could use value suppliers without anyone noticing, and which factories to skip entirely.
The sourcing strategy
With a hard ceiling, the question is never what is cheapest. It is what do you touch every day? The sofa, mattresses and dining table received real budget. Nightstands, mirrors and decorative pieces did not need it.
Spend where it matters. Save where it doesn’t.
- Sofa
- Mattresses and beds
- Dining table
- Frequently used seating
- Nightstands and side tables
- Mirrors
- Decorative pieces
- Selected lighting

The suppliers behind the project
- Sofa and lounge chairs — Upholstery Specialist. Strong sofa construction at the right price point
- Dining and bedroom — Solid Wood Manufacturer. Honest materials and finishes for frequently used pieces
- Nightstands and accents — Value Furniture Supplier. Clean design that protected the budget
- Wardrobes and built-ins — Custom Cabinetry Factory. Made-to-measure storage without premium-brand markup
What they selected
Eighteen pieces made the final list — not the eighteen cheapest, but the eighteen that made a $20K home feel deliberate.
- Living Room ($6,200): Sofa, coffee table, side tables, lounge chair and rug
- Dining Room ($3,800): Dining table, six chairs, sideboard and lighting
- Bedrooms ($6,700): Bed frames, nightstands, dressers and mirrors
The decision that defined the project
Dana originally chose a premium marble dining table that would have consumed nearly 15% of the budget. A sintered-stone alternative freed $1,800, which went into a better sofa — the piece the family actually lives on.
One substitution saved $1,800 — and bought a better sofa.
After the sourcing days
After the family flew home, we continued with production follow-up, on-site quality inspection, export packing, consolidation and delivery support in New York.
“Three days in Foshan replaced three months of guessing.”
