Black Lacquer Screen

Over a deep matte black lacquer ground, figures and beasts in cream, warm brown and pale pink are built up in layers of eggshell inlay, gold and silver powder and coloured lacquer, with crushed eggshell giving the rock faces a fine grain. A lacquer-art technique of the 1920s, made here by hand. Red-lacquered edges frame it.
